Its location – a 70-kilometre ride from downtown Kuala Lumpur makes it within easy reach of the Malaysian capital, but once you reach the inner sanctum of the Bentong-based retreat, you feel far and away from the hustle and bustle of big city life.
An early morning pick-up by your driver cum guide from your Kuala Lumpur hotel starts with heading out of the city limits for approximately 70 kilometres (1 – 1,5 hours, traffic depending) in north-eastern direction into the Pahang province. Pahang town is a tourism attraction on its own with its vibrantly-painted houses and natural beauty. It carries the nickname ‘Fresh Lung Air Washing’ due to its abundance of nature and unlimited means to enjoy the scenic, green surroundings.
Arrival at the Lentang Forest Reserve, which will form the base of 2 days of holistic treatments, self-expression via art and applying traditional philosophies, and being guided into the finer art of patience and compassion. The team at this sanctuary will give you an orientation of what is to be expected before you start your ‘detoxification’ program. Activities such as gardening and following the mindfulness of landscaping principles have proven to have a positive effect on the human mind. The gardens at the sanctuary form the perfect canvas for easing into a calmer mind set.
Lunch is included at the retreat. Aligned with the overall philosophy, the meals are well-balanced according to the overall concept of this stay. The ingredients are not only harvested from the local gardens, they also are purchased from local communities around the retreat, giving back to society in the most effective means possible.
The majority of the afternoon is dedicated to the retreat’s nursery where part harvesting, part planting form the backbone of creating a new tempo in your daily routine. Under the guidance of experts in their fields, you will soon feel the rejuvenation flowing through your whole body and mind as a start of bringing balance and harmony to one’s self. With spending a complete day among the plans and trees, the afternoon ends with a simple meditation session to reflect on the experiences you have encountered during the day. Often overlooked as a means to calm one’s self, a free painting session alleviates some of expressions you may have. A therapeutic session, lasting approximately one hour, ensures complete freedom in expressing experiences through a paint brush. The day ends with a soothing, 1-hour foot spa.
Dinner and overnight at the retreat
An early wake-up call is followed by a nutritious breakfast with another half day filled with the wonders of the surroundings, and finding a renewed balance during your travels. We start the morning with a visit to a farmer’s market nearby the retreat. Meeting the locals and sharing their passion they have for everything green and organic follows closely in the footsteps of the program sustainable methods. With new tips from the local market go-ers, you head back to the retreat to further prepare the grounds for planting and seeding. Almost all the farming techniques used during these programs can easily be adapted for indulging into some home farming in pursuit of a greener and healthier life style.
Cooking organically and using local produce follows after tending and preparing the grounds for new fruits and vegetables. Retreat participants receive information and cooking techniques on continuously live a healthier lifestyle when adapting to some of the tips from the expert chefs. De-stressing does not only come from nurturing activities, also food and the preparation of it is one of the core foundations of maintaining your body, mind and soul as a clean and balanced ‘temple’.
With the flavours of the introduction to true organic cooking still lingering around, you will head over to the nearby Chamang Waterfall for a simple yet delicious picnic lunch. The lunch combines carefully taking in the nutrients as well using a simple meditation technique to intertwine all activities – with the calming sounds of clashing water from the waterfall as background music – into one enlightened experience.
You will have free time to roam around the nursery and take a sapling home with you as memento of this experience nearby the Lentang Forest Reserve. Should you wish to sponsor a tree (with your name on it) or take home one of your paintings, these options can be decided on spot with the retreat team. At 4pm, it is time to leave this heavenly place behind as your driver cum guide drives you back to Kuala Lumpur and your overnight address.
