2 Days Homestay in Phrao

2 Days Homestay in Phrao

Phrao has retained its authentic look, feel and ubiquitous friendliness for a one-of-a-kind experience

There is little not to like about Phrao, one of the authentic alternatives to escape Chiang Mai for an out-of-the-ordinary homestay experience of an area that holds tight to treasured values, the pinnacle of Thailand’s hospitality, and nature at its finest. Set around 100 kilometres outside the former capital of the Lanna Kingdom, the area is well-known for its fertile, U-shaped valley that dominates the Sri Lanna National Park.

The simplicity of this homestay tour is also the strongest asset and a decisive factor when heritage and authenticity peak on your requirement list of travel needs. Keeping a low profile on the tourism trail, Phrao has turned into a homestay paradise in North Thailand for guests that truly want to explore the country’s authentic side. Your 2 days local experience will be guaranteed filled with ample smiles.

Day 1 | 2 Days Homestay in Phrao

Chiang Mai – Phrao                                                                                                            [L, D]

Your homestay adventure starts with an 8:30am pick-up from your accommodation in Chiang Mai by your English-speaking guide and driver. The 100+-kilometre drive in north-eastern direction may not see an amplitude of tourism sites along the way, but with nature changing slowly once reaching the outer rim of Doi Chang Dao with its vast farmlands, you’ll realize that something truly rural is about to commence.

We start the morning with one of the larger waterfalls in the area: the Buatong Waterfall may see visitors from all nations heading over to this place of serenity and its impressive 100-metre slopes due to its natural beauty. We continue to Baan Luang at Phrao, where we are warmly welcomed by the village chief and your host for the night. A locally-prepared lunch will be served at your host’s home before we commence with exploring the area by bicycle (or local vehicle for guests who do not prefer to bike around).

A simple local lunch is served at a farm house

One of the village’s pride and joy is a small folk museum where attributes and depictions of their culture and lives in the mountains are cherished. Before dinner is served, you will have ample time to explore the village at your own pace. The night over is spent a the host’s home (very basic accommodation)

Day 2 | 2 Days Homestay in Phrao

Phrao – Chiang Mai                                                                                                          [B, L]

Rise and shine! Following in the daily rhythm of the locals, the morning is reserved in donating alms to the few monks that live around the village. This daily routine has a deep spiritual meaning and partaking in this practice is something that one once has to experience. You head back to your village for a simple breakfast at your hosts’ family home. Part of the deeply-woven cultural aspects of the inhabitants lies in the preservation of handicraft. Guests can choose to learn the finer skills of either clay doll making or get the hang of making robe from bamboo; both serve as decorative items and your hand-made results will turn into the perfect souvenir of your Phrao stay. Finally, to round off your homestay program, a quick lesson in Northern-style cooking like the locals are far from the lessons learned when taking part in one of the more commercially-tinted cooking classes.

Lunch is included at the village.

It will be time to say thank you to your hospitable host family, and all those who contributed to this experience of a life time. Via Mae Taeng, with a stop at the stunning Wat Baan Den, we return back to Chiang Mai and your booked accommodation.
