Still having the aftertaste of so much delicious on your palette, you will be brought over to a museum, unknown to many. The preservation of ancient recipes with Malay, Indian and Chinese spices and ingredients are not only cherished from generation to generation – they’re still actively used in what is now known as Phuket Baba Cuisine. No need to rush, as you and your travel companion will have sufficient time to further explore the Amanpuri facilities, ranging from its swimming pool to its immaculately-maintained beach side. You may want to break for a light lunch before we move on at one of the outlets.
Rum making and Phuket may raise some eyebrows: frequently associated with its tropical brother on the other side of the world – the Caribbean -, Phuket slowly has made its foray a force to behold in re-defining handcrafted rum by using nothing but locally-sourced ingredients. After a short drive, we head down to a small work shop, known for having put Phuket on the world’s distillery map. Guided by one of the founders and rum experts, guests are to embark on a journey from sugarcane to clear, liquid smoothness according to the French art of distillation. Aside from leading the way in rum production, this distillery has embraced a sustainable means to turn local ingredients into this renowned fermented, alcoholic beverage. Two hours of tasting, smelling, learning and capturing the vision of these connoisseurs are said to put a new light on the art of rum making.
Thanking these masters for their time, explanation and the occasional tipple, we head back to the Amanpuri where you may venture further into local cuisine or try out one of the fine dining establishments on the resorts’ premises.
