Phuket [B, D]
With the rising of the sun, welcoming another day at Amanpuri, guests will enjoy an exclusive breakfast at the Amanpuri’s restaurant. Ample time to try out some of the chef’s favourite dishes is offered, as the rest of the morning is at leisure.
We highly recommend not having lunch, as a plethora of snacks and kerbside dishes will pass the revue this afternoon.
Your local expert for the afternoon and ambassador of his country will meet you at the Amanpuri as we soon make our way towards Phuket Town. With delightful examples of Indo-Portuguese mansions constructed by Chinese tin and rubber barons, Phuket Town was originally settled about a century ago by Chinese residents of Malaysia who were drawn to the lucrative mineral deposits. Tin and rubber fortunes created by the great rush formed the great Sino-Thai dynasties, which still dominate the economies of southern Thailand.
The side streets and alleys of the capital have long been the epicentre of local food culture. Its design, and often confusing lay-out, forms the back bone of where local meets, swap the latest stories and share a meal under the sky, even after the sun has set. Your guide for the afternoon will share his passion for the striking and well-preserved architecture before taking you along a region, where local eateries fill the street image from beginning until the end. Freshly-cut fruits, the smell of deep-fry, and typical Phuket bites such as Khanom Ahpong (crispy rolled-up crepe) are merely the start of an amazing late afternoon of food galore.
Still having the aftertaste of so much delicious on your palette, you will be brought over to a museum, unknown to many. The preservation of ancient recipes with Malay, Indian and Chinese spices and ingredients are not only cherished from generation to generation – they’re still actively used in what is now known as Phuket Baba Cuisine. Telling tales of the primarily influences from Penang will definitely tantalise your taste buds.
The completion of this Phuket Town afternoon does not mark the end of this culinary journey across the island. After a quick freshen up, it is seafood galore like only the locals know. The pinnacle of fresh fish and other treasured treats of the ocean are prepared like one will not find at any western-orientated restaurant. Blending in with the hospitable locals as you enjoy a broad selection of seafood affirms that an authentic taste of Thailand sometimes requires taking untrodden paths to almost enigmatic surprises. We end the evening with heading back to Amanpuri for the night.
Accommodation is booked in one of the resort’s well-appointed rooms.
Matching the quality and service standards of any Michelin-rated restaurant, breakfasts at Amanpuri is simply a joy to behold. Making time to leisurely hear the palm trees wave in the wind as you get immersed in the first meal of the day is something we cannot leave outside of this package.
No need to rush, as you and your travel companion will have sufficient time to further explore the Amanpuri facilities, ranging from its swimming pool to its immaculately-maintained beach side. You may want to break for a light lunch before we move on at one of the outlets.
Rum making and Phuket may raise some eyebrows: frequently associated with its tropical brother on the other side of the world – the Caribbean -, Phuket slowly has made its foray a force to behold in re-defining handcrafted rum by using nothing but locally-sourced ingredients. After a short drive, we head down to a small work shop, known for having put Phuket on the world’s distillery map. Guided by one of the founders and rum experts, guests are to embark on a journey from sugarcane to clear, liquid smoothness according to the French art of distillation. Aside from leading the way in rum production, this distillery has embraced a sustainable means to turn local ingredients into this renowned fermented, alcoholic beverage. Two hours of tasting, smelling, learning and capturing the vision of these connoisseurs are said to put a new light on the art of rum making.
Thanking these masters for their time, explanation and the occasional tipple, we head back to the Amanpuri where you may venture further into local cuisine or try out one of the fine dining establishments on the resorts’ premises.
Your final night of this Exquisite Experience will once again bring you to the comfort of your booked room.

It is hard to imagine that something is even more vibrant and alive than downtown Ho Chi Minh City, but Cho Lon is just that kind of place. With its distinctly Chinese character, the sounds, sights and smells of Saigon’s Chinatown are home to the Minh Huong (Chinese origin) and are worth half a day of exploration.
