A Gondola Experience at Angkor
A Gondola Experience
Truly a unique Khmer traditional boat service is located by the South Gate of Angkor Thom,
navigating the waters of an ancient Khmer moat. Enjoy gliding gently on board a gondola
while seeing the sun setting over the magnificence of Cambodia’s Angkor.
WHY THIS TOUR?
To end an Angkor day with a romantic slice of history, one must hit the waters near Angkor Thom to catch that last bit of sun before it sinks below the horizon. Befitted Angkor from embarkation to disembarkation, it is how Siem Reap’s green scenery intertwines with the hues of a bygone era.
Reliving its past without modern technology, the gondolas of Angkor once crisscrossed from moat to moat and across canals as an exclusive means of transportation for royalty, dignitaries, and the holy men of Cambodia. Under the guidance of local oarsmen and historians, sailing for one hour over these important waterways lifts up any Angkor experience.

Khmer people have been known as skilled boat makers throughout history and several boats, including the boats used by the navy in a war to win a victory cover Cham in the reign of King Jayavarman VII. Twenty-nine of the ancient boat sculptures in the Bayon temple are seen, demonstrating the courage of navy in the King Jayavarman VII’s period. The archaeologists illustrate that the ancient Khmer boats and Cham boats carved in the wall of Bayon temple are the victories of King Jayavarman VII’s navy force over Cham’s navy in the war after 1177 A.D. One of these types of boats has been carefully constructed to resemble the fine artwork done in the past.
