WHY THIS TOUR?
Kyaikthalae village is home to a community-based tourism project that benefits local people through agricultural and craft industry development initiatives. It is managed by residents and travel specialists with the aim to increase visitors’ awareness about community support schemes.
Your visit will also help with the sustainability of this scheme, as funding from the trip helps with ongoing running costs. In return, you will get an insight into an alternative way of life. This immersion in an idyllic rural landscape reveals a serene lifestyle far removed from the hectic urban existence followed by city-dwellers. You will get the opportunity to explore this inspirational village and interact with the villagers.

TRAIL ITINERARY
09:00 - 17:00
In the morning, the driver and guide will collect you from your hotel and take you to the river. Board the ferry for the short ride to the other side of the river, then continue to Kyaikthalae by road. Upon arrival, you will receive a warm welcome from the residents.
After an overview of the village initiatives provided by the community leader, you will take a tour of the locality – a nearly 25,000 sq-m area of fertile land that was transformed into vegetable cultivation fields shortly after Cyclone Nargis struck in 2008, leaving lives devastated. It is now an essential food resource, especially for a nearby monastic school that is home to over 800 students. You will learn about the village and the people that this community-based tourism project supports.
You will get an insight into local domestic industries, including bamboo basket weaving and sewing. An exploration of the surrounding farmland will reveal how natural fertiliser is created, how crops are cultivated and poultry are reared.
Back at the Community Lodge, there is time to sit down and relax over a simple home-cooked lunch. Before leaving the village, there is the option to leave your mark and plant a tree.
This enlightening excursion provides a unique insight into a way of life where a connection with Mother Earth reigns supreme and traditional practices and customs are preserved.
At the end of the tour, the driver will take you back to the hotel.
