You will be picked up from your booked south Bali or Ubud resort and make your way to Kesiman and the home of Vaughan and Putu, who run the Mekar Bhuana Conservatory from their family home. Following in the footsteps of the Indonesian government by recognizing Gamelan as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014, this private endeavour by these 2 passionate individuals of preserving endangered classical gamelan and its extensive repertoire will be clear once you meet your hosts.
Vaughan Hatch left his hometown of Wellington New Zealand to study classical gamelan on a scholarship in Bali; it was here that Vaughan became aware of how tourism and modern society was affecting traditional performing art forms. After he met his wife Putu they created Mekar Bhuana as a way to try and restore and revive the art form. Restoring antique instruments and introducing the original music back to the Balinese community. Using their own expenses without the support from the Indonesian government to aid the restoration of this ancient art Vaughan & Putu runs regular workshops to help fund the conservatory.
Aided by local practitioners, Vaughan & Putu will give you an in-depth explanation of the history of gamelan and traditional dance during this 4-hour experience, and introduce you to the various instruments, costumes and masks, through demonstrations, videos and also teaching you some basic and enabling you to get hands on with both gamelan and dance. This hands-on experience is a great way to learn the true history and art form of this ancient art!
At the end, you will be transferred back to your resort along Bali’s southern coastline or in Ubud.
