A deep dive into Cu Chi History

A deep dive into
Cu Chi History

Seen as a strategic advantage during the Vietnam War, imagining how the world below the surface
must have been in the Cu Chi Tunnels can only be witnessed when heading underground.
A memorial site in almost pristine order, within easy reach of Saigon.

Cu Chi is not only a peaceful countryside region but also an iconic and heroic land. Its system of underground tunnels is the best proof of local people’s resilience and intelligence that helped to win so many combats. One of the most striking remembrance sites of the Vietnam War, the Cu Chi Tunnels expose the elaborate ways how the Viet Cong found ways to operate its tactics during wartime.

Within a short drive from the teeming-with-life city vibe of Ho Chi Minh City, time for a moment of silence to remember the fallen and learn about the history of this 120-kilometre long underground network.

Half Day Exploring the Cu Chi Tunnels

08:00 - 14:00

Our guide and driver will wait for you in the lobby of your Ho Chi Minh hotel and we start our 70-kilometre drive in a north-western direction. The landscape on the way is a combination of picturesque rice fields, gardens and rubber plantations until we reach the Cu Chi province. It was from here that the North Vietnamese waged their guerrilla warfare and you will marvel at their ingenuity and resilience. See secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living areas and meeting rooms. The on-site guides are true experts in telling the stories about the Vieng Cong and how this part of once war-torn Vietnam played a crucial role during the TET offensive in 1968.

After a short introduction to the tunnels network of more than one hundred kilometres, you will have a chance to crawl into a short section of the tunnels to feel the oppressive narrowness and heat inside. Documentaries and displays of bloody traps will give you a vivid idea of the life and struggle in the tunnels during the wartime.

The more adventurous may explore the deeper second and even third level tunnels. For those preferring to remain above ground, there is ample opportunity to view excavated areas from above. Your guide will advise you of the length and level of difficulty of each tunnel before entering – some are easily accessed by stairs. We recommend good walking shoes and sun protection for this tour and advise you may get a little dirty!

After this encounter with history, we transfer you back to your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, where you will arrive at around lunch time. The 70-kilometre drive in eastern direction will follow the same road as the one you arrived in the morning.
