The Relaxing Environment
of Mae Kampong
The mountain village of Mae Kampong has gained national recognition for its communal approach
for living in harmony with nature: cooler climates and with a visit to local hot springs
included, we present a day tour of authentic proportions in Thailand.
WHY THIS TOUR?
Few villages around Chiang Mai are blessed with natural beauty, an unspoilt side of nature, and more agreeable temperatures than Mae Kampong. Often described as a ‘perfect destination to cool down’, it is the elevated location that definitely is considered as a magnet for visitors who enjoy an escape from the often soaring temperatures.
Additionally, San Kamphaeng is an example of how a natural phenomenon can contribute to relaxation: the sulphur-rich waters between Mae Kampong and Chiang Mai are home to hot springs are an oasis for the mind, body and spirit. This full-day tour is an excellent example of finding the right balance between an authentic way of living without upsetting the balance of nature.
08:30 - 16:30
Your day commences by meeting your guide and driver at your hotel in Chiang Mai who are eager to show you Mae Kampong and its lush surroundings. The village lies an approximately one hour outside of the Rose of the North in a mountainous region of Northern Thailand. Upon arrival at Mae Kampong, you will immediately feel the temperature differences between Chiang Mai and our main goal for the day. The residents of Mae Kampong are very hospitable, and there is not a better way to see how they’re moving on in their daily lives than at the market. Following in the footsteps of your guide, the communal forest is one of their treasure troves; while walking, you gain an insight into how the villagers keep their traditional ways of living in harmony with nature. The whole concept of Mae Kampong relies heavily on self-sustainability, a practice that is aligned with the vision of the late H.M. King Bhumibol.
Back in the village, you will wander along with the tea fermentation processing areas of Mae Kampong, see how exquisite handicraft and products are made for sales and visit the local temple and nearby school (closed on weekends and public holidays). The 7-tiered waterfall completes this morning tour before enjoying lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, we head over to the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs, situated around 35 kilometres outside Chiang Mai. The healing powers of these hot springs, both for physical and mental relaxation, are widely known in Thailand. The high amount of sulphur in the groundwaters, aligned with the peacefulness of its surroundings, make this an excellent stop to ease your mind.
When time permits, we finally visit one of the most popular forms of handicraft at the Umbrella Making Centre before reaching your hotel at around 4:30 pm.
