Unique Street Life
of Yangon by Foot
You will explore once-degraded alleyways and crumbling heritage sites that have
been beautifully restored into vibrant social spaces, with colourful street art,
flowering gardens and kids’ playgrounds on this living history walking tour.
WHY THIS TOUR?
Doh Eain is a Yangon-based social enterprise and design practice that develops public spaces and restores vital heritage buildings. The company was founded in 2016 by Emilie Roëll. Doh Eain is on a mission to preserve and improve Yangon’s heritage and urban landscapes directly with the people and communities that inhabit them. The aim is to maintain unique characteristics and support the neighbourhood’s socio-economic growth.
Doh Eain is well-known for its Alley Garden project in which Yangon’s trash alleys were transformed into clean and healthy recreational spaces featuring gardens, street art and children’s playgrounds. When the garden went viral on social media, the local government became involved in even more ‘trash alley to alley garden’ projects.

TRAIL ITINERARY
09:00 - 13:00
Meet your expert guide at your hotel and get ready to soak up the vibrant sights and sounds on this living history walking tour of one of Yangon’s most celebrated cultural areas. The exploration is focused on Bogalazay Street, an area rich in heritage buildings. The adventure starts at Doh Eain’s office on 41st street. You will then set off to view a symbol of urban renewal – an alley garden lovingly created in the concrete jungle.
Along the way, take a peek into a recycling shop where one man’s trash becomes another man’s treasure. You will also view one of Yangon’s most iconic public buildings, the Secretariat where General Aung San was assassinated in 1947.
As you stroll along Bogalazay Street, the guide will introduce you to its history and local stories and will explain how the buildings are being restored to their former glory. After browsing a local market, you will take a trip down one of the city’s neglected alleyways that has been transformed into an area of vibrancy with contemporary street art, flamboyant murals and potted greenery. These improvements have brought the local community’s adults and children back on the street to socialise and play.
Lunch is at a local restaurant that serves mainly local dishes. At the end of the tour, the driver will take you back to the hotel.
