Penang’s newest cultural landmark

The Penang History Gallery is a compelling new addition to the island’s cultural attractions.

Officially opened in early April, the expansive gallery offers an immersive journey through Penang’s rich history from 1786 to 1957. Visitors can explore 37 themed zones, each featuring curated exhibitions that highlight the arrival of immigrant communities, the colonial era, World War Two, and the road to independence.

Through a blend of multimedia storytelling, period costumes, historical artefacts and recreated colonial streets, the gallery vividly brings Penang’s multicultural heritage to life.

Ideal for families with young children or cultural enthusiasts, the gallery provides a compelling indoor activity – perfect for escaping the midday heat or a rainy afternoon. Visitors can choose between self-guided tours or guided experiences led by experts. To fully enjoy the exhibits, plan to spend around one to one-and-a-half hours. This experience can be easily combined with a walking route to other heritage galleries and museums in George Town.
