Bangkok’s new SAT-1 airport terminal

A new satellite terminal at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport is scheduled for a soft opening on 28 September 2023.

SAT-1 will increase the facility’s overall capacity from 45 to 60 million passengers per year. It is part of the Phase 2 development of the capital’s leading aviation hub and covers an area of 200,000 sq-m.

The new high-tech terminal is designed to handle 15 million passengers a year and is connected to the main airport terminal via an automated people mover (APM). The APM is a driverless electric train that runs along a one kilometre track, taking about three minutes to connect between terminals.

The new four storey terminal features sustainable architectural design, including use of natural light, wastewater treatment technologies, a heat-insulating roof structure and solar cell panels. The interiors showcase Thai art and culture with the installation of decorative metal elephants, swans and a Buddha image from Pha Sorn Kaew Temple in Phetchabun Province.
