Greener future through plastic phase-out

Vietnam is setting a strong example in sustainability with a government-backed initiative to significantly reduce plastic waste nationwide.

Starting in October 2025, all restaurants and cafés within Hanoi’s Ring Road 1 – including popular tourist areas such as Hoan Kiem and West Lake – will be prohibited from using single-use plastics such as cups, straws and takeaway containers.

This environmentally focused pilot programme will be implemented in phases: By January 2026, hotels and tourist sites must stop providing plastic toothbrushes, mini shampoo bottles and shower caps; By January 2027, markets and convenience stores will end the free distribution of plastic bags; By January 2028, government offices will phase out single-use plastics and foam containers; By January 2031, the import, export and sale of all single-use plastics and products containing microplastics will be banned across Hanoi.

Other destinations across the country have already taken steps to reduce plastic waste: The Cham Islands in Da Nang and Co To Island in Quang Ninh have already banned plastic bags; Ha Long Bay has prohibited single-use plastics such as cups and straws since 2018; Ho Chi Minh City is gradually scaling back plastic use in Thanh An Island Commune and the Can Gio tourist areas – targeting a complete removal by 2030.

Nationally, plans are in place to ban single-use plastics in shopping centres, hotels and tourist sites after 2025. Restrictions on the production and import of small plastic bags are expected by 2026, followed by a complete phase-out of single-use plastics and foam containers by 2030.

These comprehensive measures are set to redefine Vietnam’s tourism, hospitality and F&B industries, reinforcing the country’s position as a sustainable and eco-friendly choice for travellers.
