Historic bridge undergoes restoration
The iconic Hien Luong Bridge in Quang Tri Province will be temporarily closed from 23 August to 31 December 2025 to accommodate a major restoration project.
Recognised as a Special National Relic, the bridge crosses over the Ben Hai River –the former military demarcation line that once separated Vietnam’s North and South. Painted blue on the North side and yellow on the South side, the structure remains a powerful symbol of the nation’s divided past and its path to reunification.
The closure is part of the Thong Nhat Park project, a US$3.5 million initiative aimed at preserving the site’s historical significance while enhancing visitor infrastructure. Planned works include structural reinforcement, replacement of corroded metal frames, restoration of the flag-raising platform and the modernisation of visitor halls with multimedia and educational exhibits.
During the closure, direct access to the bridge will be restricted. However, Asian Trails’ excursions to the wider DMZ area will remain unaffected. Guests will still be able to explore nearby historical sites and enjoy views of Hien Luong Bridge from surrounding vantage points.
