The day silence descends on Bali

On 19 March 2026, Indonesia’s island of Bali will fall silent to mark Nyepi, the Balinese New Year in the Saka calendar.

Dedicated to contemplation and reflection, it is one of the most important days in the island’s spiritual life. Rooted in Hindu tradition, Nyepi is observed across Bali as a day of introspection and renewal.

Residents remain at home, devoting the day to prayer and meditation. The international airport shuts down, shops close, beaches are empty and noise is kept to an absolute minimum in line with the core principles of no light or fire, no work, no travel, and no entertainment.

Tourists must stay at their accommodation for the full 24 hours and observe the same rules of silence. Hotels serve dinner before sunset. Afterwards, guests may use lights inside their rooms as long as they are not visible from outside. Emergency services continue to operate as normal.

In the days leading up to Nyepi, the island comes alive with purification rituals and vibrant processions, symbolising the cleansing of negative energy before New Year. This day offers a unique opportunity to witness Bali’s living spiritual heritage at its most authentic.
