Trekking into an ancient past

Asian Trails is proud to present the Orang Asli Way of Life Tour – a sustainable and transformative cultural experience that fosters respectful engagement with the oldest inhabitants of Peninsular Malaysia.

Situated just 45 minutes north of Kuala Lumpur, the village of Kampung Serendah offers a fascinating window into a world rarely seen by outsiders. Home to around 300 families, this community preserves the centuries-old traditions of the Orang Asli – a collective of ethnic tribes, each with its own language, customs and beliefs. They originally came to Peninsular Malaysia 25,000 years ago.

The surrounding forests reflect their deep-rooted commitment to environmental stewardship, while the village’s modest infrastructure reveals a blend of cultural influences and resilience.

The experience begins with a transfer to a Temuan village, where guests embark on a 5 km guided trek through peaceful, rural landscapes. Along the way, they learn how the Temuan people sustainably use native plants for food, medicine and daily life. A highlight of the tour is a home-cooked Temuan-style lunch, thoughtfully prepared and served by community members – a true taste of indigenous hospitality.

This is more than a cultural visit; it is a facilitated and respectful dialogue with the community. Led by the village head and supported by a translator, the tour is carefully designed to avoid superficial interactions and cultural voyeurism. Guests are encouraged to engage with openness, curiosity and thoughtful questions, cultivating a meaningful and mutual exchange.

Importantly, the initiative delivers tangible benefits to the host community. Fifty per cent of all profits are reinvested locally to support community development, cultural preservation and environmental sustainability.

Please note: This experience is not suitable for children under the age of 12.
