Full Day Experience Huay Xai

A day of diverse contrasts includes an insight into rural life in a traditional Lao village and exploration of the country’s history. We start our cultural adventure with a minivan ride to Ban Nam Chan, a village that is home to the indigenous Lanten tribe. These people are renowned for their cotton weaving, embroidery and use of natural dyes, especially the dark indigo used in their traditional jackets. They also produce bamboo paper for use in significant religious ceremonies. We then head to Ban Oudom village to observe the process of making Lao Lao, the nation’s beloved rice whiskey. After lunch, we continue to Fort Carnot, a defensive structure built by the French around 1900. Today, part of the fort is in ruins, but sections of the barracks and two watchtowers at the southern and northern ends remain. We conclude our exploration with a visit to Wat Chomkao Manilat in the tranquil town of Huay Xai. This shrine is situated in an elevated position, which provides a picturesque panorama of the Mekong River and Thailand across the border.
