Preserving an ancient art in Vietnam
An Asian Trails’ excursion that operates out of the Vietnamese capital is helping to keep an important cultural tradition alive. A one-hour drive from the frenetic activity of Hanoi takes delegates to the serene rustic village of Suoi Co.
This is home to a social business that preserves the art of Vietnamese paper making. Do paper is made from the unique natural fibre of the Do bark. This handmade, chemical-free paper can last up to a staggering 800 years. Besides paper making, the workshops include instruction in calligraphy, bookbinding, paper fan making and lantern folding. By producing these products, the project helps support the livelihood of underprivileged villagers.
Participation in tours also raises awareness and helps to promote the use of Do paper in modern products, such as lamp shades, notebooks and greeting cards.
