A wildlife adventure awaits beyond Vientiane
Visitors to Vientiane can enjoy a highly rewarding wildlife conservation experience, combining encounters with rescued animals, a guided forest trek and an introduction to wildlife conservation.
The Wildlife Adventure Trek at the Lao Conservation Trust for Wildlife (LCTW), situated a two-hour drive north of the capital, adds a new nature-focused dimension to the city’s attractions – and the Asian Trails team recently experienced it first-hand.

As the first wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education centre in Laos, LCTW is home to more than 389 rescued animals, many of which have been saved from the illegal trade in protected species.
Guided visits offer an insight into the centre’s work, with a chance to see rescued bears, deer and gibbons. Wild langurs and other native wildlife may also be spotted in the surrounding forest.

The experience includes trekking through the adjacent Phou Khao Khouay National Park with an expert guide, who shares insights into diverse flora and fauna along the way. Combined with lunch and a chance to learn about Lao Buddhism at the peaceful riverside temple of Wat Tha Xang, the excursion offers a varied day of nature, wildlife and spirituality.
During their visit, the Asian Trails team explored the wildlife centre and trekked through the forest, gaining a better understanding of Laos’ natural environment and ongoing conservation efforts. The excursion offers visitors a chance to discover a different side of Vientiane, beyond its famous historical landmarks.
