Cultural boost as new Opera House opens

On 17 October 2026, Shanghai welcomed a new cultural landmark with the opening of the Shanghai Grand Opera House in Expo Culture Park.

Inspired by a traditional Chinese fan, the striking building features a sweeping exterior staircase leading to a rooftop terrace with views of the Huangpu River and the surrounding cityscape.

Designed as both a public destination and a performance venue, the Opera House features three auditoriums with a combined seating capacity of 4,200. Its programme spans opera, orchestral concerts, dance, traditional Chinese opera and contemporary productions, while a dedicated arts education centre hosts workshops, masterclasses and cultural learning activities.

Running until 20 February 2027, the inaugural season features 47 productions and 82 performances, alongside more than 100 arts education programmes. Highlights include Asian premieres of Tosca by Teatro La Fenice, Aida by the Mariinsky Theatre and Der Rosenkavalier by Berlin State Opera.

With its distinctive architecture and diverse artistic programme, the Shanghai Grand Opera House offers visitors a new perspective on the city’s cultural scene.
