The cultural exploration begins with a cruise aboard a traditional long-tailed boat along the Chao Phraya River, offering an authentic glimpse into the daily life of the communities that live alongside this majestic waterway. The journey takes us past Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, one of Bangkok’s most iconic landmarks. Back on land, a tuk-tuk takes us to nearby Wat Hong Rattanaram, a temple built during the late Ayutthaya period on the banks of Khlong Bangkok Yai. The temple was established by a wealthy Chinese benefactor named Hong. When King Taksin chose the Thonburi area as the site of the new capital, he supported this site as a centre for religious education. Its principal Buddha image, Phra Saen, was created in the Lan Xang art style. Another interesting feature is the sacred holy-water pond, where King Taksin is reputed to have bathed before setting out to lead his forces against the Burmese invaders. The tour then continues to Wat Pichaiyatikaram, whose ubosot (ordination hall) has a roof resembling a Chinese carriage hood and is notably without a chorfa, the distinctive ornamental decoration traditionally found at the apex of Thai temple roofs. The exploration concludes at the riverside Santa Cruz Church, a 16th-century landmark and testament to the longstanding relationship between Thailand and Portugal.
