Half Day Pandanus Weaving in Cherating
Discover the intricate art of weaving screw pine or pandan leaves. Known locally as mengkuang leaves, these are expertly transformed into stylish and functional products. We are taken from our accommodation to Cherating village on Malaysia’s East coast. This location is famed for its many traditional textiles and handicrafts workshops. Expert artisans will show us how this weaving craft is undertaken, from start to finish. The pandan leaves grow in abundance in this locality, so the use of this plant makes this the ultimate sustainable activity – there is no waste and no need for the use of other products in the production process. Some of the pattern styles are unique to each location, so this is a very localised souvenir. After the leaves have been dried out, they are ready to be woven. Before this is undertaken, the artisans use different natural dyes to colour the pandan, ahead of it being fashioned into a particular object. Pick up the perfect gift that is truly Malaysian, including bags, pouches, letter holders and colourful mats that will add style to a room.
