Cultural journey reveals living traditions

Discover the living heritage of Xi’an on a new Asian Trails excursion that showcases a rich variety of art forms and cultural traditions.

The diverse experience offers an immersive journey through the Guanzhong region, blending folk art, history and traditional performance.

Originating in the rural communities surrounding Xi’an, Huxian Farmers’ Painting is a highlight of the trip. This distinctive form of Chinese folk art evolved from traditional paper-cutting, embroidery and painting techniques. Renowned for its bold colours and expressive compositions, it vividly depicts scenes of rural life, seasonal farming practices and local customs.

The full-day exploration also includes a visit to the Guanzhong Folk Art Museum. Established by a private collector following three decades of collecting and supported by an investment of nearly 300 million yuan, the museum houses approximately 40,000 artefacts spanning the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang dynasties, offering a fascinating insight into China’s varied heritage.

For a deeper cultural immersion, an optional Laoqiang Opera performance can be arranged. Originating in northern Shaanxi, this traditional show is characterised by powerful vocals, rhythmic percussion and storytelling rooted in rural life. Lunch is included at a local family-run restaurant.
