Diverse activities packed into three days

Asian Trails has launched a new three-day tour in Mae Hong Son, offering a compact introduction to one of Northern Thailand’s most scenic and less-visited regions.

The programme provides an authentic experience of the region’s mountain landscapes, local communities and cultural traditions.

Starting and ending in Chiang Mai, the excursion is designed as an easy extension to Northern Thailand itineraries. The journey follows winding mountain roads through Pai and Pang Mapha, with stops at the historic Pai Memorial Bridge, panoramic Pai Valley and Lod Cave, where impressive stalactites and dramatic karst formations create a memorable underground experience.

In Mae Hong Son, the tour focuses on authentic local experiences, including a morning market visit, where traditional ethnic dress and local produce offer an insight into everyday life.

A walk across the scenic Su Tong Pae Bamboo Bridge leads through rice fields, while a long-tail boat journey to a Shan village provides an opportunity to meet the local community and see the Burmese-style temples of Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang.

The exploration also includes sunset views from Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, the rare calcite formations of Tham Kaew Komol Cave, the riverside town of Mae Sariang and the dramatic gorge at Ob Luang National Park.

The ideal travel period is November to February, when cooler temperatures, morning mist and clear mountain views create the classic Mae Hong Son atmosphere. This is also the region’s busiest travel period, particularly around December and January, so advance planning is advised.

Fern Resort Mae Hong Son is the recommended accommodation, offering a peaceful setting surrounded by rice fields and forested hills. Its natural environment complements the programme’s focus on getting back to nature while providing comfortable facilities for international travellers.

Available with English, German and French-speaking guides, the new programme complements Asian Trails’ existing 4-Day Mae Hong Son–Pai Soft Adventure. The longer programme takes a more active approach, with trekking through rural landscapes and cycling through the scenic countryside, making it a suitable option for travellers seeking greater physical activity and outdoor adventure.
