New checked baggage screening procedures

Airports across Thailand will introduce new checked baggage screening procedures from 16 October 2026 as part of ongoing aviation security measures.

Under the revised measures, checked baggage may be opened without the passenger being present if screening officers identify items considered suspicious, prohibited or potentially harmful to aviation safety.

Bags will not be routinely opened and the change is not expected to affect most travellers. Any inspection will take place in a designated area under controlled conditions and be video recorded. Passengers will be notified if their baggage is opened and inspected.

Travellers departing from Thailand are advised to check the latest baggage and security requirements with their airline and departure airport before travelling. Those with international connections should also check requirements at transit and destination airports, as regulations may vary.

Similar checked baggage screening procedures are already in place in many countries, including Japan, Singapore, South Korea and the United States, as well as in parts of the Middle East and Europe.

Travellers are encouraged to use TSA-compatible locks and to keep valuables, fragile items, important documents and essential personal belongings in hand luggage.
