Let there be light in Luang Prabang

Laos’ cultural city of Luang Prabang is preparing for Boun Ok Phansa, one of the country’s most atmospheric annual celebrations.

Marking the end of the three-month Buddhist Lent, this year’s religious festival takes place on 26 October 2026. Temples, homes and streets throughout the town will be illuminated by candles and handmade lanterns, creating a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.

The following day, Boun Lai Heua Fai, the Festival of Light Boats, brings the celebrations to the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers.

People from local villages and temples create elaborate boats from bamboo, banana trunks and traditional paper, decorating them with Nagas, lotus flowers and other Buddhist motifs.

Carried through the town in procession, the illuminated vessels are later offered to the river, accompanied by smaller candlelit offerings set afloat on the water. The ritual represents making merit, expressing gratitude and seeking blessings and good fortune.
