Historic porcelain sites gain UNESCO status

Jingdezhen’s historic porcelain industry sites have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognising the Chinese city’s longstanding contribution to the development of ceramics and its role in international cultural exchange.

The inscription was made during the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee in July 2026, making it China’s 61st World Heritage site. Located across the hilly terrain of Jingdezhen in southeastern Jiangxi Province, the cultural landscape preserves a complete handicraft porcelain production system that developed between the 10th and 19th centuries.

Covering 120 sq km, the area comprises 45 component sites, including historic workshops, raw-material extraction zones, transportation routes and traditional neighbourhoods.

Jingdezhen’s influence extended well beyond China. Blue-and-white porcelain, produced using Chinese techniques and Persian cobalt pigment, became particularly influential in Europe and contributed to the development of the Chinoiserie style during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The new designation adds another significant cultural attraction to itineraries in Jiangxi. Jingdezhen is accessible by air via Jingdezhen Luojia Airport, with direct flights from major Chinese cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
