Crafting connections in Siem Reap

Travellers can now engage more deeply with Cambodia’s rich artistic heritage through new hands-on cultural experiences at Satcha, a leading social enterprise and handicraft centre in Siem Reap.

Available through Asian Trails, the interactive workshops help preserve centuries-old techniques while connecting guests with traditional Cambodian craftsmanship.

The new DIY short classes allow guests to learn directly from skilled artisans across a variety of disciplines. Participants can try leather carving, creating personalised designs on cowhide – a craft with a long history in Cambodia. Another option is weaving colourful coasters from water hyacinth and rattan using techniques traditionally found in the country’s rural communities.

Visitors may also discover the fundamentals of wood carving alongside Satcha’s experienced artisans, learning bas-relief techniques inspired by decorative motifs seen across Khmer temples and heritage sites, including the romdoul flower, the nation’s national flower. Ceramic workshops are also planned, offering the opportunity to shape handmade bracelets and small clay creations inspired by traditional pottery techniques.

More than a creative activity, the workshops provide meaningful opportunities for cultural exchange while directly supporting Cambodia’s artisan community. By participating, travellers help preserve traditional skills and support sustainable livelihoods for local craftspeople and young artisans in training.
