Hill tribe welcomes visitors into their world
On a recent visit to Chiang Mai, Thailand, Asian Trails’ sourcing team explored a Karen hill tribe community on the rural outskirts of the city, where traditional ways of life continue to thrive.
Located close to Doi Inthanon, Mae Win Village offers travellers the opportunity to connect with ethnic cultures through community-based tourism, supporting local development in a meaningful and sustainable way.

At the heart of the experience is authentic cultural exchange, where visitors learn directly from community members about centuries-old traditions rooted in the former Lanna Kingdom, alongside the rich heritage and wisdom of the Karen people.
Asian Trails has launched a series of programmes designed to bring guests closer to the community’s unique way of life. A full-day excursion combines a visit to nearby Mae Sapok Waterfall with hands-on farming and cultural activities with local villagers.

For a more immersive experience, multi-day programmes feature bamboo rafting, ethical elephant encounters and other active pursuits, combined with overnight stays in the village. A wellness-focused journey is also available, offering guests a more enriching and restorative experience designed to enhance the mind and soul.
