Phuket opens new sustainable dive attraction
A striking new underwater attraction off Thailand’s southern coast is breathing new life into the country’s dive scene.
Located near Racha Yai Island, off Phuket, the Hanuman Reef features 47 large, purpose-built sculptures forming an artificial reef designed to encourage coral growth and provide habitat for marine species.

Installed at depths of approximately 12-19 metres, the 3D‑printed statues portray characters and scenes from the Thai Ramayana. At the heart of the site stands Hanuman, the revered monkey warrior who embodies strength, loyalty and courage – an enduring and iconic figure in Thai culture and mythology.
Created to ease pressure on natural reefs, the site promotes sustainable tourism by creating an alternative dive location that actively contributes to ecosystem regeneration. Early signs of coral colonisation are already visible, alongside increasing numbers of reef fish and marine life.
Divers can observe the interaction between art, nature and sustainable tourism on a scuba diving expedition with Asian Trails. The site is included on selected trips to Racha Yai Island, subject to tide and weather conditions.
